He became good friends with two of them, Antoon Hermans and Anton Kerssemakers. In those days, Vincent bought his art materials and had lithographs printed in Eindhoven.
The world-famous Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Cycle Path (between cycle path intersection 99-35) goes between Eindhoven and Nuenen. After dark, thousands of tiny stones light up and you can imagine you are cycling though Van Gogh’s painting of ‘Starry Night’. It’s a magical experience! Eindhoven has four Van Gogh Monuments: the Gennep and Coll watermills, the St. Catharina Church and Anton Herman’s house.

How does the Van Gogh cycle route work?
The Van Gogh cycle route forms part of the cycle route network in Brabant. There is a Van Gogh cycle route sign at every intersection. Follow the Van Gogh cycle route signs from one numbered intersection to the other. Follow the cycle route network signs between the intersections. Ten short routes in the form of loops have been marked out. The routes are joined together by linking sections.

This house was built by Pierre Cuypers on a commission from the retired goldsmith Antoon Hermans.
St Catharina Church Eindhoven
In February 1885 Van Gogh made an ink drawing which clearly shows a sketch of the St Catharina Church.

- Geldrop Castle
Geldrop Castle, with a tea garden and an English landscape garden, is not on the Van Gogh Cycle Route, but about two kilometres further on in the town of Geldrop. It is well worth a visit! If you want to visit the castle, follow junctions 85 and 30 from junction 77. Geldrop Castle is between junctions 85 and 30.
- Geldrop Weaving Museum
Something else to recommend Geldrop is the Weaving Museum. This museum gives a good impression of the days of the home weavers. When Van Gogh lived in Nuenen he became fascinated by these home workers, and made at least sixteen drawings of them. The Weaving Museum is at Molenstraat 21 in Geldrop, and is open every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00.
- Kollen watermill
On one of his many walks from Nuenen to Eindhoven, Van Gogh painted the Kollen (Collse) Watermill. The mill is located right on the border of the two communities.The mill was reconstructed and restored in 2003 exactly as it appears in Van Gogh’s painting. This painting is on display in the Noordbrabants Museum.
- Van Gogh-Roosegaarde cycle path
The world-famous, innovative Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Cycle Path links Eindhoven to Nuenen, and can be found between cycle junctions 99 and 35. The 600 metre cycle path was designed by the artist Daan Roosegaarde, and comprises thousands of small stones that light up after dark. The design was inspired by Van Gogh’s painting ‘The Starry Night’.
- Opwetten Watermill
The Opwetten watermill offers something totally unique; where else in the world can you find yourself in one of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings? Van Gogh lived in Nuenen about 135 years ago and regularly walked past the largest mill-wheel in the Netherlands. The watermill was one of the artist’s favourite subjects for drawing and painting.
- Van Gogh Mural Eindhoven – Eindhoven
Tip: you can make a diversion of a few hundred metres from the route at junction 77 to see an unusual mural. You will find this mural in the Spoortunnel bij het Orkestpad and the Doolstraat. This underpass is one of the old roads between Nuenen and Eindhoven, along which Van Gogh would often walk if he wanted to get from his parents’ house to the station. You can stop by for a delicious bite to eat or a refreshing drink, and make use of facilities such as a repair kit, bicycle pump and e-bike charging station. These bicycle cafés can be recognised by the hexagonal 'Brabants Fietscafé' sticker on the window.
